Join us over lunch to hear Angela Morgan explore the lives and achievements of the 'Black Elite' of 18th-century London.

Our guest speaker Angela Morgan will explore the lives and achievements of four remarkable individuals, who could be considered as part of the ‘Black Elite’ of 18th-century London. This talk will give you an insight into their unique journeys and the circumstances that shaped their opportunities and legacies.

For Phyliss Wheatley, Ignatius Sancho, Julius Soubise and Jane Harry-Thresher, each of them was enslaved; but their stories took new directions due to the curiosity and generosity of their masters. They were able to engage in reading, writing and sporting pursuits, activities that would have otherwise been inaccessible to them. These opportunities allowed them to showcase their intellect, creativity and skill.

Despite these privileges and achievements, life for these individuals was continually marked by uncertainty. They corresponded with renowned writers and philosophers, mingled with high society, and participated in the cultural life of London. Yet, throughout these experiences, they remained acutely aware that their acceptance was conditional, their presence tolerated but never fully secure.

Angela Morgan Angela Morgan is a Blue Badge Tourist Guide. She is an expert in the history of the lived experience of Black people in London during the eighteenth century.
