Drinks Receptions
With the whole House available for hire, 17 Gough Square is the perfect place to host drinks receptions. All our rooms overlook the peaceful square and include many original features, including wooden floors and window seats.
Our larger rooms, the Withdrawing Room and the third-floor Garret, are most suitable as the main event spaces for larger gatherings. Both rooms have windows on three sides and so are light-filled on summer evenings, and enchantingly atmospheric on winter nights. Our smaller rooms can be open for guests to discover our collection, or even as spaces for comfortable lounge areas, food stations or bars.
The House is the perfect venue to enjoy cocktails, canapés, and sparkling conversation!
A short introductory talk about the remarkable history of Dr Johnson's House and its inhabitants can also be included.

By the late 1750s, Johnson was among the most celebrated figures in London. He was renowned for his wit, his conversation, and his love of lively debate…a spirit that we still celebrate in these rooms to this day.
A Note on Suppliers
Dr Johnson’s House is a unique environment in which to hold an event, with wonderfully atmospheric historic
interiors and artefacts. As such, there are specific requirements to working in such an environment and, therefore, we have a list of approved suppliers.
Please speak to our suppliers directly regarding the services they provide, although we are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Curator’s Talk
If walls could talk, Dr Johnson’s House would be a great storyteller. There are many stories at 17 Gough Square, from 'Dictionary Johnson' and his social circle, to the remarkable story of the survival of a 300-year old house.

A few minutes’ walk from Farringdon and Chancery Lane stations in the City, we are easy to reach by public transport, including Tube, Rail, Thameslink and the Elizabeth Line. Vehicle access to the doorstep.
