
The House of Words has long been filled with wit, talk, and lively company. In the Garret, Samuel Johnson laboured for almost nine years to assemble the first great English dictionary, shaping the language as we know it today.
Located just off Fleet Street in the City of London, 17 Gough Square is a remarkably untouched time-capsule with original 17th-century features and an iconic history.
With a long history of entertaining (Dr Samuel Johnson was a very sociable man!), the House offers a charming, atmospheric and uniquely flexible setting for a variety of experiences. Unlike many museums, we are able to move our furniture and objects to accommodate different set-ups within our spaces. Additionally, each hire can include the whole house, so becoming your own private townhouse for the duration!
Our specialist suppliers can provide whatever you need for your event, from fine cuisine and cocktails, to floristry, music and lighting.
Perfectly situated between both the City and the West End, we are easy to reach by public transport, including Tube, Rail, Thameslink and the Elizabeth Line. Our five-storey historic house is available to hire during both the day and evenings on every day of the week.
