All skill ought to be exerted for universal good; every man has owed much to others, and ought to repay the kindness that he has received.
Johnson: Rasselas (1759)
What our volunteers say:
“I first went to Dr Johnson’s House when I began to notice Johnson popping up in many of the books I was reading. Whilst there, I bought a copy of his Essays and Boswell’s Life, becoming seriously enamoured with the man and his work. I’d come to the house every so often for a lecture or exhibition, then more often for the book club. Finally, I accepted the inevitable and volunteered. I work full time and my hours in the house on a Saturday morning are some of the most rejuvenating and relaxing of the week. I get to welcome people to the house, tell them about things that fascinate me, and when it gets quiet, I read and write in a space shared by many of my favourite authors.”
Adrian
"I came to Dr. Johnson's House looking to build my experience working with museum and heritage collections for my career and was lucky to find this volunteer opportunity checking the condition of paintings and prints in the House. Although I am still new, it has been a very enjoyable experience learning more about Dr. Johnson, his work, the places he spent time in, and the people that admired him through the artwork. I look forward to what I will unwrap every week."
Sophia
“I enjoy English literature and it’s good to share aspects of it … discovering something new, or old and discovering a new aspect of yourself. The house is a time machine waiting, it seems, for the return of its travellers – not Dr Who but Dr Johnson!”
