Festive Special Lecture

Twelth Night - Festive Special Lecture

Lunchtime Lectures - Dr Johnson's House Series

Thursday 12 December

12pm - 12.30pm

Free (booking required)

Join us for a whirlwind tour of Georgian Christmas traditions and celebrations at Dr Johnson's House. You'll hear about 18th century festive foods and have the opportunity to explore this atmospheric historic house museum.

In his Dictionary of the English Language, Johnson’s entry for Christmas is: ‘the day on which the nativity of our blessed saviour is celebrated, by the particular service of the church.’ In Georgian England, Christmas day was celebrated by attending church in the morning, then back home or to someone else’s house for a hearty feast and entertainment in the evening.

The Georgians loved a celebration, so come along and explore what the festive season was like in Dr Johnson's era!

Tea and mince pies will be served for attendees!

Tea and mince pies will be served at this event: please let us know 48 hours in advance, via an Eventbrite message, if you have any specific dietary requirements or have any allergies.

This event is part of Festive FSQ 2024, sponsored by The Fleet Street Quarter BID.
