Children Welcome!

children's hands turning the pages of two old dictionaries

We've been welcoming children since 1752, when 8-year old Francis Barber came to live with Samuel Johnson.

This is not a 'stuffy museum' - it's a fun House of Words where children can explore, play, learn, chat, time travel, imagine - all using their words!

Things you can do:

  • Discover what a Slubberdegullion, Jiggumbob or Camelopard is (take a look in Johnson's Dictionary to find these and other weird and wonderful words...)

  • Play word games

  • Dress up like a Georgian gent or lady

  • Try writing with a quill and ink

  • Explore a 330-year old house, sit on the chairs and in the window seats

  • Meet Hodge - Johnson's very own 'very fine cat'

  • Hear about the firemen who saved the House during the Blitz

  • And... read!
