The Vanity of Human Wishes
By Samuel Johnson
£4.50 + P&P

The Vanity of Human Wishes is written in imitation of the Tenth Satire of Juvenal, a popular style of writing in the eighteenth century. It was published in 1749, while he was occupied on his Dictionary of the English Language. Written at typically Johnsonian high speed (he composed the whole poem in his head before putting pen to paper), it is often considered his greatest poem.
